photo of darren gergleHCI+D co-founder and co-director Darren Gergle has been inducted into the ACM SIGCHI Academy, one of the highest honors in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. The SIGCHI Academy recognizes leading scholars whose contributions have fundamentally shaped the discipline, and Gergle’s induction reflects his longstanding influence on HCI, CSCW, and Social Computing research.

Gergle serves as the Bao Family Professor of Human-Computer Interaction in the Department of Communication Studies, with a courtesy appointment in Computer Science. As director of the CollabLab, he has advanced foundational research on how visual information structures communication and group interaction, integrating theories from social and cognitive psychology into the design and evaluation of interactive systems.

His leadership at Northwestern has been equally significant. Gergle is a former decade-long Director of Graduate Studies for the Technology and Social Behavior PhD program, and a key contributor to interdisciplinary initiatives across the Segal Design Institute, the Cognitive Science Program, and the Communications Residential College.
Gergle’s induction into the SIGCHI Academy recognizes not only his scholarly contributions but also his role in shaping the broader HCI community through mentorship, institution-building, and sustained interdisciplinary collaboration.
